What we can do for you, when you need it most.
If you’re a postgraduate student or early career researcher you’ll be very pleased to learn that the Library at the University of Essex has, in its fifty years of existence, built up research holdings that match – and in some areas surpass – those of many older and much larger institutions. However, having the resources on the shelves, or available in electronic form, isn’t sufficient in itself. We know that researchers often need specialist assistance to help the make best use of the original source material and information they have collected in the course of their research. Turning raw data into a readable paper or dissertation isn’t easy and getting the paper published and cited by your peers is another day’s work.
Here at the University of Essex we are fortunate to host several centres with particular skills in the field of research support and and we recommend that researchers draw on the expertise available within these centres.
Key among these are the UK Data Archive, with their extensive experience of research data management, and the Research and Enterprise Office (REO), who offer workshops in grant writing and research funding. Similarly, colleagues in the Talent Development Centre (TDC) offer a valuable PhD Thesis Writing Course, while Learning & Development provide training on diverse subjects of interest to researchers. Library staff work closely with colleagues in the TDC, UKDA and REO to provide relevant training within their established programmes.
For the postgraduate research student, the University’s innovative professional development programme, Proficio, should be the first place to look for such training opportunities. If you need help in tracking down or contacting any of the above, please contact me.
The Library also provides support for researchers and our team of Subject Librarians offer a range of specialist/bespoke support, including:
We can also provide drop-in sessions and workshops on the above themes and researchers can take advantage of our Book a Librarian service to make an appointment with a Librarian. We also provide a platform for experts from across the University to share their knowledge of allied subjects. Such events will be advertised on this site. In the meantime, if you would like help in identifying and using relevant research resources, or simply wish to discuss any other research-related issues, please don’t hesitate to book a one-to-one session with one of our team of Subject Librarians.
