Library facilities at the Southend campus Library facilities for staff and students based at the Southend campus of the University of Essex are provided jointly by the Albert Sloman Library (ASL) at the Colchester campus, and by South Essex College of Further and Higher Education (South Essex College) in Southend. Students registered on courses in Southend receive a library card for South Essex College, which allows them to borrow books from the South Essex College library and to get access to the College building. Access to IT labs and an open study area is provided at the Gateway building. Major collections of e-books and e-journals can be accessed through the Albert Sloman Library website. The Library at South Essex College of Further and Higher Education The College library is located on the first floor of the South Essex College building opposite the lifts. During term time, the opening hours are: Monday to Thursday 8.30am-9.30pm Books and other materials on reading lists for courses at Southend are available from the shelves of the library at South Essex College. The library catalogue can be searched online from the standalone computer in the library and from the Albert Sloman Library website (see Access to other libraries for more information). Books can be borrowed for four weeks (standard loan) or one week (short loan) and can be renewed by the following methods:
Undergraduate users can borrow up to eight books at any one time. Third year undergraduates and postgraduates can borrow up to twelve books at any one time. All overdue items will incur fines and you will not be able to renew or borrow until they have been paid. Books may be reserved if they are on loan through the library catalogue. For more information about the library at South Essex College, ask a member of the Library team there, or contact the Library by email (library@southessex.ac.uk) The Albert Sloman Library The Albert Sloman Library (ASL) is situated at the Colchester campus. Students registered on courses at Southend are eligible to borrow books from the ASL as well as the library at South Essex College. A daily van service runs between the ASL and the South Essex College library from Monday to Friday. If a student identifies a book in the ASL library catalogue that they would like to borrow, they should fill in a request form at the South Essex College library (Request for Albert Sloman Library Loans) for the book and attach a printout of the relevant catalogue record. Alternatively, students can email ASLrequest@southessex.ac.uk, with their name, South Essex College ID number, course and the title details of the book. It will then be sent to the South Essex College library on the van for the student to collect. Short loan and three day loan books are excluded from this service. Please note that next day delivery of books cannot be guaranteed although every effort will be made to ensure that books are sent as swiftly as possible. Students may also visit the ASL to borrow books directly and make use of resources. Subject to demand, a weekly bus service from Southend Campus to Colchester Campus is provided at minimal cost. This service currently operates on Wednesdays. Full details (including booking arrangements) are available from the Students' Union, located in 'The Union' building. It is assumed that any book borrowed directly from the ASL (rather than via the van service) will be returned directly to the ASL, whether in person or by post. Information on ASL opening hours and borrowing conditions is available from the library website. Online resources - e-journals, e-books and databases University of Essex students at the Southend campus can access online resources through the Albert Sloman Library website, including e-journals, e-books and databases. In business, entrepreneurship, management and marketing our rapidly growing virtual holdings' amount to over 3,000 e-journals and 4,000 e-books. In the area of nursing and health studies, there are over 2,200 e-journals and over 190 e-books. All of the resources which the Library subscribes to are detailed in the catalogue. Most resources can be accessed from home by entering a University network username and password. For more details, see the e-resources page. South Essex College online resources are not available to University of Essex users. Open study area and IT labs at Southend campus The Open study area on the third floor of the Gateway Building at the Southend campus currently has 15 PCs and can comfortably seat 50 students to read, write essays or to conduct research. The Open study area is available from 7am-midnight Monday to Saturday, and from 9am-midnight on Sunday. In addition to this, there is two IT labs which are available to students when not in use for classes. These have a total of 76 workstations and are available 7am-midnight Monday to Saturday, and 9am-midnight on Sunday. The University's wireless network is available throughout the Gateway Building. Other libraries - Inter-library loans, visiting other libraries If a student wants to get access to an item which is not available from the South Essex College library, or from the Albert Sloman Library, there is an inter-library loans service, via ASL, through which items can be obtained from other libraries. Details of this service and online request forms for items are available from the inter-library loans page on the ASL website. If the item is a book, when it has arrived, it will be sent on the van for collection at the South Essex College library. It should be noted that occasionally inter-library loan books are not permitted to leave the library to which they have been loaned. On these occasions, a student would have to come to the Albert Sloman Library in Colchester to get access to the item. If the item is a photocopy of a journal article/book chapter, it will be sent electronically. Requestors will get an email which contains a link to the article, which they can then access and print out. Alternatively, a photocopy may be requested to be sent to the requestor, at the address included on the request form (i.e. Southend campus, or requestor's home address). Inter-library loan is an expensive service for the Library and you are asked to limit your requests to essential items. Articles supplied on inter-library loan may be used only for private study. To get copies of journal articles which are not available at the South Essex College library and are only held in print by the ASL (i.e. where there is no online access available), send an email to the inter library loans department (contact details below), clearly stating the details of the article, where you would like it to be sent and that you are based at Southend. A photocopy of the relevant article will be sent to you at the address included (i.e. Southend campus, or requestor's home address). As with inter-library loan, this is an expensive service and should be used selectively. There are schemes in place which give University of Essex students access to some other libraries, particularly University libraries. Full details of these schemes are available from the Access to Other Libraries page on the ASL website. To sign up to one of these schemes, please contact the Circulation desk at the ASL (contact details below). Academic staff based at Southend can also register as members of the South Essex College library. Staff should contact Terry King or Susan Powell at Student Administration at the Southend campus to register for the South Essex College library. Staff will automatically be registered at the Albert Sloman Library and issued with a University campus card. Once you have your library card for each library, the situation is the same as described for students above. Online resources can be accessed from off campus using your University username and password. Academic staff are also eligible to sign up to the SCONUL Access co-operative borrowing scheme. Full details are available from the Access to Other Libraries page on the ASL website. To sign up, please contact the Circulation desk at the ASL (contact details below). Teaching staff should notify the ASL of all readings required for courses well in advance of the course commencing. A list of relevant contacts is included below. Copies of all recommended books will be purchased for the South Essex College library where possible. Selected journal articles can also be ordered for the South Essex College library to hold as part of their photocopy collection. You may find it useful to search the library catalogue at South Essex College to get some idea of what is already there. Individual books required for your own research or that you think will be useful additions can be requested for the ASL and/or the South Essex College library, by completing the online book suggestions form. Please use the comments box to specify which library you would like the book to be purchased for and how many copies you would like. Students on Higher Education courses at South Essex College validated by University of Essex Students registered on HE courses at South Essex College which are validated by the University of Essex are eligible to request items from the Albert Sloman Library to be delivered to the College library via the daily van service (Mon-Fri). The van service runs every day from Monday to Friday. South Essex College HE students are not eligible to access online resources from the Albert Sloman Library website for technical and licensing reasons. Online resources for South Essex College programmes are available through seeNet. South Essex College HE students are welcome to visit the Albert Sloman Library and use it for reference purposes. See the Information for visitors page for more details about services that are available. Thesis submission for PhD students in Southend Theses for binding should be sent to Alison Gray at the Albert Sloman Library. Theses cost £36 a copy (up to 400 pages, if there are more than 400 pages the thesis will have to be bound as 2 or more volumes). This payment must be received before your thesis is submitted to the Library. It is possible to pay online via myEssex. Click on myAdmin and then web payments in the my money section. You will then need to use the webpay method to make an unspecified payment for the amount that you owe the Library. It is then necessary for you to contact Alison Gray by emailing agray (non-essex users should add @essex.ac.uk to create the full email address) to advise us that you have made the payment. Copies should be printed out, single or double sided. Guidelines on thesis submission and binding are available from the Information for Research Students page on the University website. The University is an Associate Member of the British Library's EThOS project, which aims to make the research output of UK doctoral students available in electronic form to interested parties worldwide. Further information about the project is available here. Once you have deposited your copies with us, Library staff will inform the Registry and deal with the bound copies. If you wish to submit additional personal copies for binding, the Library is very happy to arrange this for you.
