Library facilities for Kaplan Open Learning students Library facilities for students enrolled on Kaplan Open Learning courses validated by the University of Essex are provided jointly by the Albert Sloman Library (ASL) and by Kaplan Open Learning (KOL). Online resources and the Albert Sloman Library The Albert Sloman Library (ASL) provides access to online resources through the Library website, including e-journals, e-books and databases. All of the resources which the Library subscribes to are detailed in the catalogue. Most resources can be accessed by entering a University login ID (username) and password. For more details, see the e-resources page on the ASL website. You may also wish to consult the guide to accessing online resources and services on the Library website. 1. Access to electronic resources Is through your Essex University username and password. Please see the notes on accessing e-resources from off campus . If you experience persistent technical problems trying to access an e-resource, please contact the Enquiry Desk (see Help & Support below) for further assistance. 2. The Library catalogue Can be accessed from any computer with internet access. It includes thousands of electronic books on business studies and related topics – accounting, auditing, finance, marketing, management, etc. These e-books can be searched by author or title in the catalogue, or you can search by subject& keyword Please note that e-books supplied by Ebrary require you to install the Ebrary reader on your PC in order for you to be able to read the full text. 3. Many journals are available online as well. If you have a reference to a specific journal article, type the name of the journal in the periodical search screen Check the holdings information on the record to make sure that the Library has access to the volume you wish to see, then click on the link to connect to the online volumes. 4. For links to relevant online resources in Business and related fields Have a look at the Business & Management subject page In particular, the list of Databases on the Business & Management subject page is a useful starting point. For full text journal articles on a topic, try the following databases: Nexis (newspaper articles) For information on specific companies or sectors, try searching: Business Source Complete – includes Datamonitor market research reports, and SWOT reports for thousands of companies Hemscott Company Guru Academic – financial data on UK companies Nexis – good source of business & financial information, including the full text of the Financial Times. You are welcome to visit the ASL in person if you should wish to. Further information about opening hours and borrowing services is available from the Library website.
