Increasingly social scientists utilise large quantities of computer data in their research, which can often be derived from a dataset deposited with a data archive. Registration is usually required before these resources can be used. General/International Statistics Cross-National Time-Series Data Archive (CNTS) (Library Database) Based on the data resources of The Statesman’s Yearbook, CNTS offers a listing of international and national country-data facts. Contains statistical information on a wide range of countries, with data entries ranging from 1815 to the present, so particularly useful for historical data. Portal to national & international statistical data Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) (Library database) Data service providing an extensive range of key economic and social data. Four main components: ESDS Government - facilitates use of large-scale UK government surveys, such as the General Household Survey and the Labour Force Survey; ESDS Longitudinal - supports a range of longitudinal data collections ; ESDS Qualidata - provides access to a range of qualitative datasets ; ESDS International - provides access to a range of international datasets including IMF (Direction of trade statistics; International financial statistics); National Statistics Databank (UK official statistics time series data); OECD (Main economic indicators); UNIDO (Industrial statistics database); World Bank (World development indicators; Global development indicators). Find information and access data variables from 100s of censuses conducted worldwide since 1960. It includes links to the websites of national statistical offices plus a useful census Knowledge base GREAT BRITAIN - CENSUS STATISTICAL DATA Home of the ESRC Census Programme & portal to official population census data. Datasets from 1971 onwards can be downloaded (subject to registration) by members of the UK educational community. Offers guidance on how to find and access census related datasets. This includes microdata, aggregate statistics and boundary data. Links to online guides, training events, census related projects and research groups. Cathie Marsh Centre for Census and Survey Research (CCSR) Specialist research body based at the University of Manchester that plays a key role in developing and disseminating Samples of Anonymised Records. It is possible to register to get access to some anonymised data from 1991 onwards Office for National Statistics census Information on the history, content and collection of the census. Data available from the 2011 & 2001 censuses. Online Historical Population Reports Access to the complete population reports for Britain and Ireland from 1801 to 1937. In addition to the census the site also contains enumerator's notebooks, essays from historians which set the materials in context and bibliographies to guide further reading Socio-economic datasets from Experian (based on census data) at very local level (super output area) are available GREAT BRITAIN - PERSONAL RECORDS National Archives census records Searchable catalogue of census records from 1801-1911 plus guides to using the census. Online access to most transcripts requires payment.
