UN Treaties

Contains the text and status information for all UN human rights related international instruments.

UN Treaty Series Collection
Electronic database for the official UN texts.

Treaty Bodies Database
Contains the texts of the treaties governing the treaty bodies plus status information.

Recommended site Bayefsky.com
Its aim is to enhance the implementation of the human rights legal standards of the United Nations and to increase access to these documents by making materials associated with the treaty system available in electronic and user-friendly form.

International Law Commission
Established in 1948, the International Law Commission's mandate is the progressive development and codification of international law, in accordance with article 13(1)(a) of the Charter of the United Nations.. The site contains texts, instruments and reports, documentation such as yearbooks, annual reports and summaries. The site also includes an analytical guide to the work of the Commission including the broad headings of: sources of international law; subjects of international law; succession of states; state jurisdiction/immunity from jurisdictions; law of international organizations; position of the individual in international law; international criminal law; law of international spaces; law of international relations; and settlement of disputes.

Council of Europe website containing the complete listing of Council of Europe treaties, including the full text and explanatory reports.

Inter-American System

Organisation of American States: Treaties
Treaty page from the OAS, Dept. of Legal Affairs. The site contains the text of the treaties and signatories & ratifications by year, subject and alphabetically.

Recommended site Inter-American Commission on Human Rights: Basic Texts
This site contains all the basic texts of treaties, declarations and protocols pertaining to human rights in the Inter-American system, plus signatures and ratification information. 

University of Minnesota: Human Rights Library: Inter-American Court of Human Rights
Contains the text of the Charter of the Organization of American States; the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man; and the American Convention on Human Rights.

African Union

Recommended site African Union: Official Site
Contains the text of all AU treaties plus status of ratification.

African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights
Contains the text of the African [Banjul] Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, the Convention Governing the Specific Aspects of Refugee Problems in Africa, and the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, plus the Constitutive Act of the African Union.

African Human Rights Instruments
From the African Resource Centre, Human Rights Library, University of Minnesota the site contains the text of treaties and status information.

Recommended site Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria: Treaties
Contains the text of AU treaties.

Geneva Conventions

Recommended site OHCHR: List of Treaties
Includes a section on humanitarian law and the bottom of the page, site includes the text of the treaties plus status.

International Committee of the Red Cross: Geneva Conventions
Site includes the text of the treaties plus commentary.

Recommended site International Humanitarian Law database
Another site from ICRC containing about 100 IHL treaties, commentaries on the four Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, an up-to-date list of signatures and ratifications and full text of reservations.

National Implementation Database
Again a site from the ICRC providing documentation and commentaries concerning the implementation of international humanitarian law at national level. The number of States included will steadily increase over time.

Web Directories

International Treaties and Agreements
Provided by the World Legal Information Institute, this is a directory for international instruments which can be navigated by: country; subject; international organisations & bodies; multi-national collections; indexes, status lists; and research centres. The World Legal Information Institute (WorldLII) is a free, independent and non-profit global legal research facility developed collaboratively by Legal Information Institutes and other organisations.

World War I Archive
This archive of primary documents from World War One has been assembled by volunteers of the World War I Military History List (WWI-L). International in focus, the archive intends to present in one location primary documents concerning the Great War. From pre-1914 to post-1918.

Multi-Laterals Project
The Multilaterals Project, begun in 1992, is an ongoing project at The Fletcher School, Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts to make available the texts of international multilateral conventions and other instruments. It includes treaties in the fields of the environment, human rights, commerce and trade, laws of war and arms control, and other areas. Most of the texts date from 1945 or later, but the collection also includes historical texts, from the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia to the Covenant of the League of Nations.

From Yale Law School the site includes documents from 4000BCE to the 21st Century.

What convention.org
A trilingual legal search engine with access to public law, particularly human rights and humanitarian law. Contains over 250 conventions analysed article by article and includes status information (entry into force, ratification, reservations).

Treaty Section (Foreign and Commonwealth Office - UK)
Maintain a database of UK treaties, which holds details of all the treaties to which the UK is, or has been, a party. It should be noted however that texts of treaties cannot generally be provided.
