Why choose Essex for your graduate traineeship?

Contents:

The University of Essex is situated in over 200 acres of attractive parkland, although the campus itself is comparatively small and has a friendly feel, having a student body of only 8,800.  The Albert Sloman Library caters for all these students, as well as the staff and is ideally placed close to the main student accommodation and overlooks the lake.  We also sometimes provide books for students at our Southend campus and the East 15 acting school in Loughton, but they do have access to their own library facilities.

The trainee year at Essex provides experience of working in an academic library, which is necessary for those applying for postgraduate library school courses, and the programme itself is interesting and varied.  We spend a term each in the cataloguing, inter-library loans and accessions departments, and undertake weekly duties on the circulation and enquiry desks.  Throughout the year we have the chance to go on trips to other libraries and institutions which can be both enjoyable and informative, allowing us to compare the different ways of doing things.

Colchester itself is the oldest recorded town in Britain.  As you might expect this gives the town a real sense of history and there are many interesting historic buildings situated in the town.
