Visits to other libraries

Contents:

All library student assistants have a chance to visit other libraries in the local area. Here are the descriptions for each visit:

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU-formerly APU), Chelmsford

This visit takes place during the Summer vacation and is a half day visit. We normally go to the Rivermead campus at Chelmsford. The visit includes a tour of the library and a chance to talk to members of library staff at the university.

University of East Anglia (UEA), Norwich

The UEA visit usually lasts a whole day and takes place once again during the Summer vacation. A tour of the library is organised and several members of the library staff give talks about different aspects of the library service. There is usually a chance to talk to staff involved with Circulation and Inter-Library Loans, and in the past, we have been able to look at some of the library's Special Collections.

Colchester Sixth Form College

This is another visit which takes place during the Summer vacation. It is a half day visit and involves a tour of the library and talks on Cataloguing, Inter-Library loans, etc.

Colchester Institute

The Institute visit takes place in the Christmas vacation and normally lasts half a day. The staff give talks on different aspects of library procedure and provide a tour of the library.

Chelmsford Public Library and Essex County Libraries Headquarters

This visit takes place during the Easter vacation and lasts for the whole day. The morning is spent at the Library Headquarters, where the librarians give talks on library procedures such as the cataloguing and acquisitioning of library stock and dealing with circulating stock, and on current developments in the public libraries. The afternoon is spent at the central library where a tour is usually arranged and there is a chance to look 'behind the scenes,' especially at the 'call centre' for the Answers Direct service.
